1. Brief Introduction of the Laboratory
The Chongqing Key Laboratory of Edge Intelligence Computing was reorganized and optimized from the Chongqing Key Laboratory of Big Data and Intelligent Computing. In order to further promote demand-driven scientific research, in 2023, the Chongqing Institute of Green and Intelligent Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences jointly established the laboratory with Chongqing Teslian Technology Co., Ltd. and obtained the approval of Chongqing Science and Technology Bureau. The laboratory focuses on basic theory and major technical breakthroughs in big data intelligence. In the past five years, it has undertaken more than 20 national major scientific research tasks, published more than 300 high-level papers, applied for more than 200 national invention patents; won 5 first prizes of provincial and ministerial science and technology awards; cultivated 2 national-level young talents; developed and implemented multiple big data intelligent systems in fields such as airport security and smart cities; and the developed face recognition technology has a revolutionary impact and has successfully incubated a listed AI company on the Science and Technology Innovation Board.
2. Laboratory Positioning
The positioning of the laboratory focuses on applied basic research, belonging to the key field of "Digital Intelligence Technology - Big Data." On one hand, guided by the mission of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to "do national things" and "assume national responsibilities," the laboratory aims to target the forefront of world science and technology, carrying out original and forward-looking basic research on technology. On the other hand, the laboratory will focus on major technological issues in the upgrading and development of the digital economy and intelligent manufacturing industries in China and Chongqing, with application needs as the guide, conducting cutting-edge technological research, developing intelligent big data systems to solve practical problems, and directly enabling social and economic development.
3. Research Achievements
The laboratory, relying on the Chongqing Institute of Green and Intelligent Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and integrating with Terminus Technologies Co., Ltd., has achieved remarkable research results in the fields of big data fundamental theory, key technologies, and big data applications over the years.
(1)Theory and Methodology of Intelligent Analysis for High-Dimensional Sparse Big Data
The theory of high-dimensional sparse big data analysis serves as one of the fundamental theories supporting intelligent applications of big data. The achievements focus on three key scientific issues: modeling, representation, and efficiency in the direction of high-dimensional sparse big data analysis. A theoretical and methodological system for high-dimensional sparse big data analysis has been constructed, breaking through the traditional bottlenecks in modeling, representation, and efficiency, leading the international research in the direction of latent semantic analysis of high-dimensional sparse data. Some research achievements have been applied and transformed, such as the intelligent service trading platform of ZBJ.com, which has built a portrait system of "employer-order-service category-service provider" and an intelligent matching method for supply and demand of "search-recommendation-assignment" services; the pharmaceutical intelligence network of Kangzhou Big Data, especially the COVID-19 big data platform assisting epidemic prevention; the social network analysis system for job-related crimes of Neusoft Group, etc., achieving significant economic and social benefits.
In recent years, this research has undertaken more than 10 projects, including the National Key R&D Program of China and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Related achievements have been published in top international journals and conferences such as IEEE T. TKDE, IEEE T. NNLS, IEEE T. SC, IEEE T. Cybernetics, IEEE T. II, IEEE T. SMC Systems, AAAI, IJCAI, ICDM, etc. The research achievements have won important awards such as the First Prize of Chongqing Natural Science Award, the First Prize of Chongqing Science and Technology Progress Award, and the First Prize of China AI Technology Progress Award, and have cultivated many outstanding young talents.
(2)Research and Application of Large-Scale Adaptive Intelligent Visual Analysis Technology
Breakthroughs have been made in technologies such as "3D structured light and active near-infrared multimodal biometric live detection." The integrated biometric identification technology is at the leading domestic level, with a false acceptance rate reduced to one in ten million, meeting the stringent requirements for identity authentication. The achievements have been widely applied in civil aviation airports, finance, security, and other fields. Among them, 70 domestic civil aviation airports, 618 security inspection channels, covering 50% of the national security inspection channels, and 60% of airports with passenger flow exceeding 10 million people; in the field of smart finance, face verification services cover more than 70 commercial banking institutions at all levels, covering more than 160,000 bank branches, with a market share of ≥ 83.2% for banks with self-built systems, over 300,000 intelligent business terminals, and daily usage exceeding 300 million times. The research achievements have promoted the intelligent transformation of China's civil aviation security and financial sectors.
In recent years, this research has undertaken more than 10 major projects, including the National Key R&D Program, the "Internet+" Major Project of the National Development and Reform Commission, the AI Innovation Development Project of the National Development and Reform Commission, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, various science and technology programs in Chongqing, and the Special Project for the Transfer of Scientific and Technological Achievements of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Related achievements have been published in top journals such as IEEE T. PAMI. The research achievements have won awards such as the Science and Technology Promotion Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the First Prize of Chongqing Science and Technology Progress Award, and the First Prize of China AI Technology Progress Award; incubated CloudWalk Technology Co., Ltd. to list on the Science and Technology Innovation Board; and received multiple instructions from national leaders.
(3)Development and Application of Big Data-Driven Automatic Monitoring System for Aquatic Ecological Environment
Breakthroughs have been made in key factor detection technology for aquatic ecological environment, big data-driven aquatic ecological environment analysis technology integrating domain knowledge, and the construction technology of the aquatic ecological environment monitoring and early warning cloud platform. Automatic monitoring devices and systems for aquatic ecological environment have been developed. The "fine-grained numerical weather forecasting system" has been developed, establishing for the first time a meteorological radar and observation data assimilation model for complex mountainous terrains such as the Three Gorges, improving the accuracy of weather forecasting. The flood inundation deduction analysis system has been developed, realizing disaster warning and forecasting. This has promoted the integration and innovation of the entire technical chain for river basin water safety research and application, effectively enhancing the supervision and emergency response capabilities of the aquatic ecological environment.
In recent years, this research has undertaken more than 10 major projects, including national major scientific and technological special projects, national key research and development plans, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, various science and technology plans in Chongqing, and the STS special projects of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Relevant achievements have been applied in multiple major projects, highly recognized by Academician Zhang Jianyun and others, and repeatedly praised by provincial and municipal leaders, providing strong support for the optimization and reorganization of the "National Key Laboratory of Lake and Watershed Water Safety".
(4)Development and Application of a Comprehensive Digital Smart City System Based on Intelligent Internet of Things Technology
By deeply integrating relevant research results in the Internet of Things, edge computing, artificial intelligence, and big data, breakthroughs have been made in intelligent wireless sensor network networking technology and collaborative computing technology in dense heterogeneous edge networks. An innovative intelligent twin description language has been proposed, and an intelligent city operating system TacOS with million-level, full-scene IoT sensing access, aggregation, computing, and analysis capabilities has been independently developed. It breaks the limitation of traditional end-to-end solutions that empower a single vertical scenario, realizing city-wide, full-scale, and full-time digitization and AI capability expansion. Based on an open and secure multi-deployment architecture and a software-defined scenario architecture, it provides a spatial digitization, intelligent tool platform and AI production platform for multi-scale and multi-scenario comprehensive spatial areas of cities such as smart buildings, smart parks, underground pipe networks, and urban bridges. It provides comprehensive smart management including equipment and facility operation and maintenance, risk monitoring and early warning, risk analysis, and operational scheduling.
In recent years, this research has undertaken national big data intelligence key projects and related science and technology special projects in Chongqing. In April 2022, it reached a strategic cooperation with the Chongqing Big Data Development Bureau to jointly accelerate the digital and intelligent upgrade of Chongqing in areas such as urban security brains, carbon neutrality, computing power algorithms, and others. The relevant research results of the smart city platform have now been implemented in over 8,400 smart projects nationwide, covering a property area of over 670 million square meters. In these implemented projects, the incident rate has been reduced by over 90%, building operation and maintenance labor costs have been saved by 40%, energy consumption has been reduced by 30%, and more than 10 million people have been served, providing an important model for China and Chongqing in the innovative application and implementation of smart city big data.
