The Research Centre for 3D Printing aims to develop grounded theory and core techniques in "Artificial Intelligence (AI) + Additive Manufacturing (AM)"，providing strong support for the implementation of Major National Project. As the technical bottlenecks of the industrialization on AM be broken through, scientific research achievements will promote the disruptive innovative transformation of AM to Intelligent AM.

Research Direction

1.     Design new materials for AM with AI algorithms.

The design is set to address the formability problems of conventional alloys during AM.

2.     Modulation of the forming process by energy fields.

The employment of energy fields aims to achieve long-term stability of the additive manufactured parts fabricated by laser powder bed fusion technology.

3.     Exploration of emerging principles for Intelligent AM.

This focuses on the development of new AM technology in future manufacturing, providing possible resolution for key technical challenges of AM in specific application scenario such as those within nuclear reactors and space environment.

Team

The Research Centre for 3D Printing is the only center in the field of AM technology in Chinese Academy of Science, and has attracted a large group of top experts and scholars. By November 2023, it has 24 faculty members of many different disciplines (materials science, optical science, computer science, to name a few) .
