The institute focuses on elucidating the evolution of ecological environment and the Mutual feedback relationship of river-reservoir complex ecosystem.
We also seek to reveal the cascade effect and formation mechanism of the ecological process of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and to make Breakthroughs on the Key technologies for intelligent monitoring, detection and control of river-reservoir ecological processes and pollution prevention. In order to realize the sustainable development of social economy in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, we put forward some measures to ensure the ecological priority of the river basin.
Finally, we aim to establish a complete discipline system of reservoir ecology, to form an intelligent technical system of river-reservoir eco-environmental process, and to build a world-class research institute.

Team
There is a team of scientific research talents with high educational level, complete professional structure, strong scientific research ability and reasonable age gradient in our institute.
Currently there are 93 staff in Three Gorges Institute, including 12 research professors, 19 associate professors and more than sixty are PHDS. There are 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 1 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, and more than 60 Talents at or above provincial or ministerial level.
All these staffs are divided into eight research groups: Reservoir Ecology Research Center，Research Center on Water Resources and Water Environment，Smart Watershed Research Centre，Research Center for Process and Prevention of Water Pollution，Center for Atmospheric Environment Research，Research Center For Ecological Restoration and Engineering，Center of Environmentally Friendly Chemistry， Research Center of Smart Environmental Analysis.
